One match, one title run

Player A is
Wins one NBO match (best of 3)69.1%fair 1.45
Same edge, best of 573.4%fair 1.36

Player A wins about 69 of 100 such matches. A title run means 6 wins in a row: if every opponent were this strong, A would lift the trophy 10.9% of the time (about 1 in 9.2).

Still in the draw after each win

Bottom row: wins in a row. Real draws get harder round by round; this shows only how quickly even a big favourite’s title chance shrinks.

How it is calculated

One match: each player wins a point on serve with a fixed chance, and we follow every game, tie-break and set exactly in the best-of-three format. The best-of-five figure uses the same two numbers.

Title run: the chance of one match raised to the number of wins needed (a top seed with a bye plays one round fewer). It assumes every opponent is as strong as the one you set – real draws are not.

Best of three vs best of five

Best of three (this event)

  • All singles matches, finals included, in the ATP and WTA events
  • Sets go to 6 games, with a 7-point tie-break
  • Fewer sets, so an upset is more likely

Best of five (for comparison)

  • Not used at the National Bank Open
  • The calculator above shows it with the same serve edge
  • More sets give the stronger player a higher match chance
  • Try other serve numbers in the match probability calculator

What a title run takes

PlayerWins neededChance per matchTitle run chance
Top seed (bye)669.1%10.9%
Unseeded (main draw)769.1%7.5%

Title chance = match chance multiplied once per win. Example: serve points won 66% vs 62%, same opponent every round – so it is optimistic.
