NHL over/under: hockey totals and the Grand Salami

Enter the expected goals of both teams to see the chance of each total. Below, compare real NHL over/under results with and without overtime.

Under 6.550.0%fair 2.00

Over 6.5 needs 7 goals or more. That happens in about 50 games in 100 like this one. Half lines never push. The overtime or shootout winner’s goal counts.

What it does

When a team trails by one goal late, it pulls its goalie. Fitted to two NHL seasons: the leader then scores 22% of the time and the trailer ties it 19% of the time. This brings ties after 60 minutes and one-goal results in line with real games. Off = plain Poisson.

Model: goals in 60 minutes follow a Poisson pattern fitted to your moneyline and total (expected goals home 3.37, away 2.88). Margin removed in proportion. Overtime and shootout treated as a coin flip; empty-net adjustment on.

How it is calculated

Expected goals for each team are fitted to your moneyline and total (margin removed in proportion). Goals in 60 minutes: Poisson for each team. A tie after 60 minutes adds one goal for the overtime or shootout winner, so a game tied 3–3 after 60 minutes finishes with 7 goals.

Fair price on a whole line = 1 ÷ (over ÷ (over + under)): a push returns the stake, so it is left out.

Full-game total vs regulation total

Total with OT and shootout

  • Counts overtime goals and one goal for the shootout winner
  • A game tied 3–3 and won in a shootout is settled 4–3: seven goals
  • Average 6.25 goals per game in 2025-26
  • More games go over the same line

Regulation total

  • Counts only goals in the three periods, before any overtime
  • A game tied 3–3 counts six goals, whatever happens after
  • Average 6.01 goals per game in 2025-26
  • Marked Regular Time on the market

Break-even chance for a totals price

Break-even chance = 1 ÷ decimal odds

Example: For example −110: 1 + 100 ÷ 110 = 1.91, so 1 ÷ 1.91 = 52.4%. Compare it with the chance the calculator shows.

Totals terms

Total (over/under)
A bet on the combined goals of both teams: over or under a line. Full explanation: Over/under explained.
Half-goal line
A line like 5.5 or 6.5. The score cannot land on it, so the bet always wins or loses.
Push (void)
Total exactly on a whole-number line. On PROLINE it is void: a single is refunded; in a parlay the leg is removed and the stake stays on the remaining legs.
Grand Salami
One line for the total of all goals in all NHL games of a day.
Puck line
A goal handicap instead of a total. See Puck line explained.
