Turn King's Plate morning line or tote odds into a chance in the explainer below. Then check the race facts, the bets and how much Woodbine keeps from the main bet types.
The King's Plate: one mile & one quarter on the all-weather track at Woodbine, for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds. Next run: Saturday, August 14, 2027.
Share kept from the win pool
Win pool at Woodbine (live racing): 11.65% association share + 2% horsepeople + 0.5% Ontario + 0.8% federal = 14.95% in all.
Money bet to win on each horse
Blue: paid back to winners. Grey: deducted before anyone is paid.
| Horse | Bet on it | Share | Tote odds | Pays on $2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Horse 1 | $300,000 | 30.0% | 1.8–1 | $5.67 |
| Horse 2 | $200,000 | 20.0% | 3.3–1 | $8.51 |
| Horse 3 | $150,000 | 15.0% | 4.7–1 | $11.34 |
| Horse 4 | $120,000 | 12.0% | 6.1–1 | $14.18 |
| Horse 5 | $90,000 | 9.0% | 8.5–1 | $18.90 |
| Horse 6 | $70,000 | 7.0% | 11–1 | $24.30 |
| Horse 7 | $45,000 | 4.5% | 18–1 | $37.80 |
| Horse 8 | $25,000 | 2.5% | 33–1 | $68.04 |
The favourite (horse 1) carries 30% of the pool: if it wins, every $2 ticket on it gets $5.67. Prices move until the gates open, because every new bet changes the shares.
How a pari-mutuel pool pays
All win bets go into one pool. First the legal percentages come off: the association's percentage; the deduction from each dollar bet authorized under a provincial enactment; the payment to the Receiver General, determined in accordance with subsection 204(4) of the Act. What is left is the net pool.
Pays per $1 = net pool ÷ money bet on the winner (net pool divided by the value of win bets on the winner). Pays on $2 = twice that. Tote odds “X–1” = pays per $1 minus the dollar staked.
Place and show pools work the same way, except the net pool first returns the stakes on the 2 or 3 placed horses and then splits the rest between them.
