How F1 points work
Points. A finishing place earns the points of the table for that session: a full Grand Prix pays the first 10 places, from 25 for the win down to 1; a sprint pays the first 8, from 8 down to 1.
Shortened race. The table depends on how much of the scheduled distance the leader completed: under 25%, 25% to 50%, 50% to 75%, or 75% and more. A sprint pays only if at least 50% was run. Nothing at all is paid unless the leader completed 2 laps in a row without a safety car or virtual safety car.
Dead heat. Cars tied for a place share the points of the places they cover: two cars tied for the win get (25 + 18) ÷ 2 = 21.5 each.
Catching up. Points needed = the gap + 1 more than the rival scores from here (with an equal total the tie-break decides: most race wins, then most second places, and so on). The most one driver can gain on another in a round is 25 (33 on a sprint weekend); a team, with both cars, 43 (58).
There is no fastest-lap point or any other bonus in the 2026 rules.

Points for each finishing place
| Finishing place | Grand Prix points | Sprint points |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 25 | 8 |
| 2nd | 18 | 7 |
| 3rd | 15 | 6 |
| 4th | 12 | 5 |
| 5th | 10 | 4 |
| 6th | 8 | 3 |
| 7th | 6 | 2 |
| 8th | 4 | 1 |
| 9th | 2 | – |
| 10th | 1 | – |
Grand Prix: full points when the leader completes 75% or more. Sprint: this scale applies when the leader completes 50% or more.
Shortened race: which scale applies
| Distance the leader completed | Points scale | Winner gets |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 2 complete green laps | No points | – |
| Under 25% | Shortest scale, first 5 places score | 6 |
| 25% to under 50% | Reduced scale | See the calculator above |
| 50% to under 75% | Larger reduced scale | See the calculator above |
| 75% and more | Full points | 25 |
In all cases the leader needs 2 complete, consecutive laps without a Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car, or no points are given.
Points needed to catch a rival
Points needed = current gap + rival's points from here + one. Level on points → FIA countback decides.
Example: You win a Grand Prix and the rival is second: the gap shrinks by 7 points.
Dead heats, teams and bonus points
Dead heat
18 + 15, sharedCars tied for the same place add the points of the places they cover and share them equally. Example: two cars tied for 2nd.
Constructors
43Each team enters 2 cars and both score. A one-two in a Grand Prix gives 43; a perfect sprint weekend gives 58.
No fastest-lap point
8 + 25 = 33The current FIA tables have no fastest-lap or bonus point. A driver's maximum on a sprint weekend is a sprint win plus a Grand Prix win.

Questions
How many points does a driver get for winning an F1 race?
A full-distance Grand Prix win gives 25 points; a sprint win gives 8. The first 10 places score in a Grand Prix, the first 8 in a sprint.
Is there a point for the fastest lap in F1?
No. The current FIA points tables have no fastest-lap point and no other bonus point.
How many F1 points can a driver score on a sprint weekend?
Up to 33: 8 for the sprint win plus 25 for the Grand Prix win. A team can score up to 58.
What happens to F1 points if a race is stopped early?
Points depend on the distance the leader completed. Under 75%, a reduced scale applies. With fewer than 2 complete, consecutive green laps, no points are given.
How are F1 points split in a dead heat?
The points of the places the tied cars cover are added together and shared equally between them.
